x402 Paywall Demo: Paying Over HTTP 402

An article genuinely behind a paywall: section 01 is a free preview, the rest unlocks over x402 with testnet USDC. No real funds involved.

Why try x402

This section is the free preview. Every reader and every search engine can read it.

x402 turns HTTP 402 Payment Required into a payment path that actually completes: the client signs the payment requirements carried in the 402 response with a wallet, the server hands the signature to a facilitator for verification and on-chain settlement, and then returns the full text. No accounts, no subscription, no redirect to a third-party checkout page — all of it inside one request.

The price is a symbolic $0.10 USDC. The point is not revenue. It is finding out whether "pay a tiny amount once, for one article" holds together as engineering.

This runs on the base-sepolia testnet and involves no real money. Testnet USDC comes free from a faucet and has no economic value — the payer is not out a cent, and the site owner does not gain one.

This article is not served to visitors in mainland China; requests from there receive 451 Unavailable For Legal Reasons. This site does not offer paid content in that jurisdiction, for the same class of reason that exchanges geo-block specific jurisdictions. It returns 451 rather than 404 because the content does exist and is merely being withheld, and a reader deserves to be told which of those it is.
